Brief History

Established in 2015, the College of Respiratory Therapy is among the recent colleges at New Era University. It obtained its permit to operate the BS Respiratory Therapy degree from the Commission on Higher Education with Dr. Danahlyn D. Evangelista as the Dean in the same year. In 2017, government recognition was granted by the Commission.

At present, there is a great need for Respiratory Therapists not only in the Philippines but also in other countries even before the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The program is currently undergoing curriculum revision and up dates making it progressively more relevant and responsive to the changing landscapes in the Philippine education system and health care system. The College has invested in developing its facilities to foster a setting where students are equipped with the necessary academic comprehension of their chosen fields of practice as well as exposure to actual laboratory and clinical situations to create a well-rounded learning experience.

Clinical education is recognized as an essential and highly significant component of professional education for respiratory therapy. Currently, the affiliate hospitals are Makati Medical Center, Philippine General Hospital, Chinese General Hospital, National Kidney and Transplant Institute, and Lung Center of the Philippines. Internship training in these institutions provides students the maximum opportunity for clinical practice and skills development in performing different respiratory care procedures. They provide the best venue for internship training because of its modern facilities state-of-the-art medical equipment and technology in health care delivery.

The college has well-stocked updated RT books. The RT laboratory is designed to give students hands-on clinical experience which includes different kinds of mechanical ventilators, spirometry, adult and pediatric mannequins for CPR and intubation, airway care, and other respiratory therapy equipment. Practice laboratory activities are designed to foster the application of critical thinking and integration of knowledge along with the psychomotor practice of clinical skills prior to real-life application. Currently, we are developing the Sleep Study or Polysomnography laboratory and are ready for students' actual practice by the academic year 2024-2025.

Some of the technological advancements in a number of fields, such as medicine, require a good background in the anatomical and physiological principles that provide the foundation for clinical decision-making, also in patient assessment, critical care, emergency care, cardiopulmonary disease management, and airway care. Therefore, this requirement makes respiratory therapy an excellent preparation for those who wish to pursue medical education and profession.

WHERE DO RESPIRATORY THERAPISTS WORK?

Respiratory Therapy may include treating diseases, infections, or viruses of the cardiopulmonary system such as lung cancer, asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, and pneumonia. RTs also provide life-saving care to trauma patients.

RTs may be found in acute-care hospital settings, including the emergency room, the intensive care unit, the newborn or pediatric intensive care unit, or the pulmonary diagnostics laboratory. They work with patients of all ages from premature infants with underdeveloped lungs to senior citizens with advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Outside of the hospital setting, RTs may work in pulmonary rehabilitation clinics. They may also counsel patients on topics such as smoking cessation and disease prevention, and they work in home care settings, teaching patients and their families to use assistive breathing devices. They may also work out of physician offices, long-term acute and skilled health care facilities, sleep disorder centers, and research centers, to name just a few.
