August 13, 2022 |
The New Era University held the 47th Commencement Exercises at the Philippine Arena on August 12, 2022. The Commencement Exercises were held there again after over two years, brought about by the effects of the pandemic. Nearly 2,300 students received their diplomas in a solemn ceremony presided over by the University administration. This year's theme, "NEU Graduates: Advancing Excellence, Discipline and Service to Humanity in the New Normal", resonated among the young men and women present, in that despite trying times, they should strive to uphold the values imbued upon them by their Alma Mater. Aside from the thousands in attendance at the largest mixed-use indoor arena in the world, the Commencement Exercises were also witnessed by those who watched the live videostream via Zoom link.
The Commencement started with Bro. Erwin Daniel S. Briones, Minister of the Gospel and University Secretary, leading the opening prayer. Bro. Franklin T. Bunag, University Vice-President for Administration, introduced the Guest Speaker for the Commencement Exercises, the current Clerk of Court En Banc of the Supreme Court of the Philippines, Atty. Marife M. Lomibao-Cuevas. In her speech before the graduates, Atty. Cuevas emphasized that as students of the University, the graduates should be God-fearing, competent, and disciplined. After the commencement address, Dr. Nilo L. Rosas, University President, conferred upon the graduates their diplomas and certificates of completion.
In his valedictory address, Myr Jdy Mahinay, Summa Cum Laude from the Psychology Department of the NEU College of Arts and Sciences, recounted the arduous journey he had to take to finish his studies. His speech was a poignant reminder of the importance of completing one's education. After the speech, the graduates took the Oath of the Alumni, administered by Atty. Randy Serrano, Deputy Commissioner of the Philippine Insurance Commission. The occasion ended with a prayer led by Bro. Elmer Mujar, Minister of the Gospel and Dean of the NEU College of Engineering and Architecture.
In an unprecedented move, not only did the University give due recognition to this year's crop of graduates, but also allowed the graduates of 2020 at 2021 to join the landmark event. This allowed the students who were affected by the lockdowns of previous years to relive the exhilaration of reaching this milestone. In a separate interview, Dr. Rosas thanked the Iglesia Ni Cristo Administration, led by the Executive Minister, Bro. Eduardo V. Manalo, for allowing this event to be held after all these years. The President is also hopeful that from this point forward the Commencement Exercises will be held face-to-face.
