A student of New Era University-School of International Relations has won the grand prize in the National Essay Writing Contest organized by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

In a message to his college Dean, Russell C. Alvarez, a freshman Foreign Service student, shared the good news he received from the NCCA on June 12. “I was informed po by the Filipino Heritage Festival Inc. (FHFI), as well as the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA) na naging Grand Prize po 'yung entry ko para sa National Essay Writing (contest) that they organized last month.”

The FHFI Essay Writing Contest was in connection with the celebration of the National Heritage Month. The contest, with the theme “Victory and Humanity Upholding Filipino Heritage and Identity”, has two categories—English and Filipino. For both categories, contestant must be able to answer the question: “The world’s first circumnavigation and Magellan’s arrival in Mactan made an impact on our identity as Filipinos. Using the five senses: sight, smell, taste, sound, and touch as a reference point, how would you express that impact on our identity?”

Alvarez joined the Filipino category where his entry “Slr, Hindi po Pilipinas ang Natuklasan ni Magellan” won the grand prize.

This is the second time in a row that Russel won the same contest. He first won last year while he was still in senior high school. He was invited again by the NCCA to participate in this year's contest which he again aced.

The NEU Family salutes Mr. Alvarez for his stellar achievement. Congratulations, Russell!
